The tape backup has been extremely unreliable.  I've have'nt been able
just write a tape and read it back since last summer.  Last time I tried
to read a tape it took me 2+ hours.  I'm in a rush to get the parts out 
and don't have time for that.  If the powers that be come down on me,
I'll scream and yell about 1 UDP and an unreliable tape drive.  If
worse comes to worse, I'll pay.  I should finish the parts tonite, 
however, and I will try PACKMS.

more staves at a time in trying to do the celesta/harpsichord part to
my "Springtime Poems" (which as you recall was my DMA final project).
Surely there must be a way to streamline this process.... (no doubt will
be featured in the 2000 version of MS...).  There will be the harp and
the percussion parts to tackle later.

My dear roommate decided to bolt out of my house in order to live with his
latest lady-love... so I am now currently looking for his replacement.
(Actually, if it so happens that I could find a cheaper place than what
I have which would offer the same amount of space for my instruments, I'd
bolt out of my house, too...).  If it so happens that you know of people
who need housing who aren't too poor, let me know.

Even though the notes will be changing and expanding drastically, feel free
to look at them and make suggestions as they occur to you.  I will contact
you over the weekend.  I would be happy to deliver you a score if you want
one before the lecture (which is Wed. at CCRMA by the way).

Believe it or not, I found a bug in PACKMS!!  My file SHATI.MS on
[220,hys] refuses to be packed; if you try to pack it, all it does is
to sit there eating up CPU.  See if you can figure it out.  Luckily,

First, did you ever achieve some satisfaction with Avram Miller, and the
proposed "freebie" personal computer?

Secondly, I have a VT125 at home these days, along with a printer which
can do dot matrix plotting (an LA12) from the VT125.  Does your program
have the ability to run on a VT125?  Is the display driver section
separable and able to be adapted to different types of displays?

We have no immediate need for this, but it might encourage use if it
existed.

I think I found a genuine tonic 6-4 in Beethoven, which not only is not
a dominant substitute, but which does not depend on a "misplaced soprano"
in the bass line: second theme of "Patetique" first movement.  It starts in
Eb minor, and the real bass is unequivocably on the 5th of the tonic chord.
It goes from I-V7-I, then modulates to Db, and does the same thing.
While we have a "misplaced" soprano as well, the real bass is in the left
hand; whichever way you look at it, this 6-4 acts like a real tonic.
In the recap, the same things occur in f and c minor.  Now what do you say
to THAT?!

One problem with "8va bassa" is that the two words take up a lot of room,
which doesn't make it practical if you only need it for one or two notes
at at time.  What I'd like to see as an option is the standard "8va" sign,
but with the bracket going up.  I haven`t found a way to do this gracefully.
Also, it would be nice to have the option of making the bracket deeper.
One other thing which is a minor nuisance is the  necessity to change
manually "8va" to "8va bassa" and to lower it below the staff.  I suggest
putting in "O-" in score input, making p4 default to -5.  For calmer nerves,
making P4 default to 18 for regular "8va" instead of 15 is easier on the
eyes, even if the P4 has to be adjusted finer afterwards.

I don't know where you get the idea that "8va bassa" isn't used much; I
find it a necessity for piano music.

I'm slowly learning the rules of the unemployment insurance game; all I can
say is that I don't particularly recommend bothering those folk down there
unless one really needs the money.  I'll be glad to get a real job at some
point.  I'm already starting to run after positions for next fall.

HPM - -3 is free.   If you have a file that's alternately 36 ones
and 36 zeroes the -3 file will be twice as large as the -1 version.
Your method is slightly (1/37) cheaper than -2 mode if the data is entirely
non-repetitive.  In typical data it will beat the -2 mode only if there
are a lot of runs of over 1300 (36↑2) bits in length.      -- Hans

Thanks for the note.  As far as I know, DEC has only a few ways of
giving away equipment.  Let me discuss them:

1) General grants of particular equipment to certain classes of
   recipients.  As far as I know, the rumoured upcoming gift of
   GIGIs meets this model.  If you are in the recipient class,
   like "Universities", then it's first come, first served,
   providing you have some vaguely plausible use.

2) External Research grants.  This program offers equipment to
   researchers in fields of direct interest to DEC.  It requires
   a formal liason mechanism to set goals and track work.  I
   expect difficulty justifying music typography under this program,
   but I will check into it further.

3) Outright gifts.  This mechanism tends to be used for aging
   equipment which is no longer useful to DEC.  It generally
   requires the DEC "owner" of the equipment to convince the
   corporate gifts committee why it ought to be given away, and
   to whom.  I unfortunately have no equipment in this category.

As you can well imagine, it's hard to get support for "arts-related"
donations out of DEC.  As to what to do now, I have one suggestion.
Since path (2) has the best chance of getting somewhere, could you
write a one page proposal on what you would do with whatever equipment
we gave you?  Something which emphasized advancing the state of the
art in your field, and especially if more people would buy DEC computers
as a result.  I suggest you talk with Ralph, and have him talk to me.
I'm sending this note to him, too.

In them mean time, keep your ear close to the ground for the type (1)
giveaway.

Boy, that "Hawaiian Wedding Song" I saw in the recycling bin is one of the
worst pieces of drivel I've seen in a while.  With pieces like that, no
wonder harpists get such a lousy reputation.  You should put your program
to better uses (e.g. the complete works of Shen or somesuch...)

Sometime in the next few days I'll drop Gayle a note informing her about
my grade of "*" (I really did want to give a NC; I still feel as if I've
been had), as well as everything she needs to do if and when she wants to
clear it (five composition assignments).  I'll leave a copy of the take-home
final in her folder, and will leave a copy of my note to Gayle for you as
well as for her folder.  For your information, the final should be completed
in six days' time.

Quite frankly, I am still not at all happy about the way the dept. has
handled this affair.  It seems that in every other school of Stanford's
calibre, there would be no question of even thinking about her trying to
finish her work in abstentia.  Now I don't like giving anyone the axe,
but I like even less the idea that someone will have walked away with a
music degree from a place like Stanford and not know a bloody thing about
music theory and literature.  Yesterday, I cleared Marty Noss' 103B
grade to allow her to graduate on time, but my conscience still bothers me
that she is still unable to harmonize simple basses and melodies in four
parts without making fundamental errors, and still has not the foggiest
notion about altered chords.  Well, I suppose it won't be at Stanford
where I'm going try to make reforms.

So far on the job scene, got on the finals list for Dartmouth and the
semi-finals for U. of Nebraska/Omaha.  Pretty dreary.

We have not produced any more copies of the thesis, due to the pain
involved, and general laziness here.  We are quite embarrassed about this
state of affairs.  There seems to be several alternatives to the
Stanford Library acquiring a copy of the thesis at this time:
1) They could order it from University Microfilm.
2) We could generate a second generation copy.
3) They could copy your copy.
4) We could run another original on the Diablo, and re-reduce the music.
Let me know which you would prefer.

The state of graphics systems, and their availability is another
embarrassing subject.  I had hopes of prying loose a GT-40 system for
you.  Unfortunately those ancient things are the only graphics systems
we have in house for running SUDS on, and we have a severe shortage of
graphics terminals for that purpose.  DEC has been remiss in either
developing any reasonable alternative, or buying any outside so we
can replace the GT40s.  There is now a new product in development which should
do the trrick, but it is still a ways away.  I feel that if I could
identify a piece of hardware which would do you some good, and was not
a critical resource internally that I could get DEC to donate it, but
it doesn't look too hopeful at this time.  I wish I could be of more
help.

Have you investigated whether any of the new Stanford-designed graphics
terminals will be available?  Is a DEC GIGI of any use?

I really feel bad that I have let you down here.  If you have any other
suggestions, please let me know.

"SFZ" in score input mode produces only "SF"; I had to change manually P5
to 92 to get that "Z" in.  I think "SFZ" used to work a long time ago, since
I tend to use "SFZ" somewhat more often than "SF" (looks more emphatic).
